BEEP, BEEP..We just love our realistic looking, multicolored roadrunner.
Here are a few things you might not know about our AZ Roadrunner.
Roadrunners are fast-running, non-migratory ground cuckoos that can outrun humans, with a diet of small prey like snakes and insects, and can even drink water from their food. They have distinctive zygodactyl feet to create X-shaped footprints. To stay warm in the desert, they use the the dark spots on their skin to absorb sunlight and they then enter a state of torpor. Roadrunners are known for their incredible running speed, able to reach up to 20 mph, faster than most humans can sprint. Despite having wings, they are poor fliers. They use their short, rounded wings for short bursts of flight to escape predators or to glide downhill. These funny birds are opportunistic omnivores, eating a variety of food including snakes (even rattlesnakes), lizards, insects, scorpions, spiders, fruits, and seeds. They don't need to drink water, getting all the hydration they need from the food they eat. How about that!
